More Yarn Happenings
Well, it’s about that time to update my yarn progress. I finally finished Matty’s gansey about two weeks ago. It took me a while because I ran out of one color, so I had to put it aside for a while. I was trying to use up some left over yarn, but ended up running short by 4 rows, ack! So I had to order the proper color (cognac heather). This is how far I got before I had to wait until I got more yarn.
Here it is completed.
After I finished that one, I started working on the February Baby Sweater by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Here it is in progress.
I used Paton’s Kroy Sock Yarn for this pattern. The color is called stripes. I used both 2 US and 5 US needles. Here’s the completed sweater. I had a little left over yarn, so I made a pair of socks, and a little flower clip. I didn’t have enough for a hat.
As usual, I have to share these buttons. I love shopping for buttons, even though I don’t particularly like sewing them on! I chose two different kinds because I just thought it looked better that way for this particular sweater. Here’s a close up of the two styles of buttons. One has a little birdie hatching out of its shell, and the other is a little elephant with a bib.
After I finished that project, I had a chance to start on my Babette Blanket. Here’s the stack of squares I have so far.
I still have a lot more squares to make to equal a full blanket. Here’s how they look like laid out. Andrew says they look funky to him in a sort of Dr. Seuss sort of way. . . I’ll take that as a compliment because that Dr. Seuss quality is what I like about this blanket, heheheh.
These are just some colors I happen to have on hand, so it’s not like I’m completely loving the color combos. So I think the next one I do I will select the colors ahead of time and work them up. At least this is giving me some practice while at the same time making my stash yarn useful. I hope when it comes time to sew all these squares together they fit all right and I don’t go crazy, ha!
And that’s it for my yarnie escapades for now. . .

Very cool! I wanted to update you on Grace’s fair entry. She entered a crocheted barbie dress with a cropped jacket and matching hat in the Western Idaho State Fair and it won second place in the youth division under age 13. She was soooo excited! I’m sure she’ll be doing more submissions to the fair next year. I’ve noticed this week she has picked up her knitting needles again. I think she feels the need to “conquer” something new. She is that way. Always wanting to be challenged. She attacks piano that way also which is why she’s as good as she is, I think.
I’ll have to show her pictures of this stuff. Do you have plans to give away the sweater? It’s really cute!! You need a grandbaby.
better jet,

Congratulations to Grace on placing second! Would love to she the outfit that see submitted. What won first prize?
I’d love to see how she comes along with the knitting. I do mostly knitting, but I also enjoy some crochet. I’ve picked up the crochet again as I’m currently working on a babette blanket.
Yes, the baby sweater, socks, and clip I’m giving to my cousin who just had a little girl in August. My sister asked me to make a little boy’s vest for Banini, so I might be attacking that project soon. My mom also just found that her “neighbor” had a baby, which is now six months old. Their neighbor is Chinese and keep to themselves mostly, so they didn’t even know the woman was pregnant! Just more recently they said they could hear a baby crying. The grandparents are the ones who usually talk to my parents and they just showed them their grand son. My mom was so excited and even my dad was telling me how cute this baby is. She was telling me how they let her carry him and she was even giggling as she told me about it. Ha ha! So she asked me to knit up a sweater, hat, and socks for this kid for Christmas. I’ve got a few projects more lined up, too, so I intend to have the needles clicking away!

Well, what won first prize was this little tiny (maybe 6″) doll dress that another girl made. Honestly, I’m not sure how it won except that maybe it was sewn and Grace’s was crocheted (there was no stipulation on how it was made). Much of it was hand sewn, which is fine, but you could see all the stitches. So, who knows how they came up with that judgement? Oh well, Grace was just thrilled to win a ribbon because it meant she won money!
She can’t seem to decide what to do with the knitting needles.
I see her pick them up, use them for a few hours, then go back to the crochet needle. Hee hee. She’s just funny. Everwhere we go she’s got yarn and some sort of needle in hand. It’s hilarious! But I’m glad she has a good hobby and she’s really talented at it too.

Oh, maybe that winner was the daughter of the judge, ha ha ha! Oh, well, 2nd place w/cash isn’t too shabby! So congrats!
A while back when I was looking for Barbie stuff I found a website that had free patterns online for both knit and crochet. Some of them looked really cute. In case she hasn’t seen them yet, here’s a link to one for example that looks basic and simple for starters with knitting. http://web.archive.org/web/20050509012652/http://www.geocities.com/groovygrrllll/cruise.htm
I still haven’t gotten around to trying Barbie clothes, but I sure am collecting a lot of scraps from all my sock yarns that I think will work well for Barbie dresses. It looks to me like the Barbie patterns in knit use a small gauge needle like US 1 or 2 or maybe even smaller. I used US 2s for most of my socks that I knit. What size crochet hooks is Grace using for her crochet patterns? The above pattern calls for a #10 and #7 steel hooks. I’d have to hunt for where I’ve stashed my steel hooks! Cripes.
